Tips for dealing with dry skin

Dry skin can itch, flake, and even bleed where cracks and splits appear, particularly on hands.

Here are a few tips to dealing with dry skin as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association:

  1. Wash your skin with a gentle cleanser.

  2. Limit baths/showers to 5 to 10 minutes using warm not overly hot water. Shorter time in the water can help add moisture to your skin; gently pat your skin dry to avoid losing the added moisture.

  3. Apply moisturizer immediately following your shower, and again several times throughout the day. Use lip balm or petroleum jelly on lips.

  4. Use a humidifier indoors.

What are the best skin care products for dry skin?

Here’s what to look for:

  1. Gentle, fragrance-free. Avoid skin products that contain alcohol, fragrance, and retinoids.

  2. Oil/Ointment or cream, rather than lotion (for the winter). These are more effective than lotions for dry skin. Look for ones that contain (one or more of the following) - Jojoba oil; vitamin E oil; lanolin, lactic acid; shea butter; hyaluronic acid; or mineral oil.
