Self Care Tips for the Holiday Season

'Tis the season to show those around you how much you care about and appreciate them...but don't forget about yourself!

The time between Thanksgiving and New Years feel like a whirlwind with all the festivities - decorating, lights, shopping, cards, gift wrapping, holiday parties, office parties, cookie swaps, kids class parties, and on and on. With so many activities on the calendar and to do's on the list, it's no wonder the holidays can feel a bit stressful.

Here's your gentle reminder that the holidays are meant to be a time of reflection, joy, celebration, and appreciation. Take small moments to step back, give yourself a little bit of self care, so you can shed the stress and enjoy the holidays as they're meant to be.

10 Tips for Self Care this Holiday Season:

1. Get plenty of sleep.

2. Drink lots of water. Stay hydrated, especially when enjoying wine or holiday cocktails at your parties.

3. Movement! Don't skip out on your regular workouts just because you feel busier. Even if it's just a walk around the block to take a breather.

4. Aromatherapy. Using essential oils in your home can help you feel calmer, relaxed, and even more festive. Use scents like peppermint, cedarwood, cinnamon, orange, rosemary, eucalyptus, or juniper berry. Simply fill a saucepan part way, add several drops of essential oils, and simmer for a little while to fill your home with wonderful scent.

5. Boost your immune system.  There are many natural options to add into your daily routine to help keep your immune system humming. A few options: Elderberry syrup, vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin D, zinc, probiotics, and garlic.

6. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea.

7. 5-10 minute daily meditation.

8. Enjoy some time in nature. Take a walk through the metro park or a hike through the woods. Nature has a different kind of beauty in the winter, and just a few minutes in nature can help you feel calmer and grounded.

9. Play your favorite holiday music while cooking a balanced healthy meal. Counter all the heavy holiday meals, sweets and treats with a healthy balanced meal.

10. Enjoy the holiday lights. There is nothing more festive than taking an evening drive or walk around town to see your neighbors holiday light displays. Bonus points if you do a walking tour while sipping hot chocolate.
