How often should you get a massage?

I get asked this question often, and the answer is, it depends - on your physical needs, your pain levels, and your stress and emotional needs.


For chronic pain, such as back and neck, every 1-2 weeks is a good frequency to start with. I've noticed with some clients as we begin to soften the tissue and retrain the area, time between massage can be lengthened to every 3-4 weeks.

For stress and anxiety, typically once a month is beneficial to relieve the physical effects built up by stress. If you are going through a particularly stressful phase in life, you may benefit from increasing your massage frequency during that time.

If you are training for an athletic event, such as a marathon, I recommend increasing your massage frequency to every 2-3 weeks during your training phase. This way we'll be able to be proactive in keeping your body in good form and target any specific areas that may be a potential for injury.
